Waiting for the angels

So I’m up late… third night in a row. I’m waiting for the angels of insight and inspiration to come and sing to me, but so far they seem to be off somewhere else. Diego suggested before he went to bed several hours ago that maybe they’re getting drunk or caught in a traffic j...

Out on a day pass

M.J.L. Kellogg:

daypass.jpg The new 24-hour ride ticket from Cap Metro is wonderful! There's no fumbling for coins; the driver doesn't need to deal with flimsy transfers. A buck buys one for the first ride and then it's good for 24 hours thereafter. Just a quick swipe at the farebox is all that's necessary on subsequent rides.

This one ticket was good for an emergency run to the dentist for his first appointment of the day, followed by trips to Central Market South and the credit union downtown, a browse in BookPeople, a first inspection of the new Whole Foods, late breakfast at Katz's, and much, much more.

BookPeople has some excellent book bargains right now. Some are out on display tables; others are to be found on the shelves. The Austin Public Library no longer has a copy of a certain book recording travel to Mexico just after World War II (A Visit to Don Otavio), but BookPeople did, and at a true bargain price. Today people were buying cowboy adhesive bandages in tins, Freakonomics, and Huerfano.

At Whole Foods, the fish looked beautiful and included mackerel. There were none of those lamb round steaks from New Zealand, but there were beautifully frenched legs of lamb. The locker for aging has glass walls so that the sides of meat are visible. Sweetish Hill coconut macaroon cookies are there. The impression at the store is that there isn't that much that's new, but that the various food-service stations take up a great deal of space. Astonishingly, the acoustics are very good.

Austin dentist will retire after 55-year-career (Austin American-Statesman)

His office looks like time stopped somewhere in the 1950s. He still uses a 1954 dental chair and a 40-year-old machine that mixes the stuff used in silver fillings. There's not a computer in sight.
