Painless!

Painless!

A while ago, I thought I had glandular fever, and submitted myself - most superlatively unwillingly - to a blood test. I was absolutely scared stiff of those horrid pointy instruments of torture! I had avoided them at all costs since I was 10 years old… But that horrible muscle-bound old woman with the huge needles which she tried to jam into my bones is another story. In fact, I’ve been avoiding them for a long time…

When I was about 13 or so, I refused to have a flu injection, preferring to cower in the corner with huge saucer eyes, pleading with the doctor not to force me into it. Sorry Dr Quo! And sorry for the next appointment I had, where I did the same thing. Oh, and also the third appointment, where I managed to avoid it again. Sorry :/

Years later, when I was on a plane travelling to the States, I realised that I didn’t have my vaccination card with me. I was so panicked that I ordered somewhere around a half a dozen brandies to calm my nerves - and to numb the pain which I was anticipating when they yanked me from the line, pinning me down and shoving blunt rusty syringes into my arm. Of course that never happened, they just waved me through, and I was able to keep my irrational fear of needles for another day.

So when I was being tested for glandular fever, I was a little nervous. I made the mistake of tensing up when the needle came close to me. Oops. Second time around it was painless. I was stunned!

Today, I was at the dentist, and had a similar stunning experience. The dentist used some topical anaesthetic on my gums before putting the needle in, and I literally did not feel a thing. I think I might even almost be cured of my irrational fear. Now for spiders… :)

Things Seanan needs to do, take one.

Things Seanan needs to do, take one.

These are things I need to do, of the grand and over-arching sort that generally don't make 'to do' lists, because, well, they're too grand to fit on the sort of list where 'buy toothpaste' and 'panic' are totally acceptable entries. Here are the things I need to do: * Find a dentist I can reach eas...
