In the 1800s, preventive dentistry for children was virtually unknown, Elizabeth Brayer notes in her biography of George Eastman. "Children, if they were lucky or had a good diet and genes, might hope to keep their teeth into their mature years. More likely, decaying teeth or receding gums would begin in early adulthood and the tooth puller would be visited."
