Flint Journal Related Content Texas-Sized Mobility GapPublished in: Internet News Search: dentist September 23rd, 2005 HOUSTON, WE (THE POOR) HAVE A PROBLEM If nothing else, the sister ‘canes have helped reveal a transportation gap in the American economy. In our major cities, it breaks largely along racial lines, and appears to be as much an obstacle to class elevation as the digital divide. See, if one can’t get to the better jobs, schools, health care, entertainment and sports, one is not living like the “half” that can. If the nicest theatres, supermarkets, medical and dental offices, libraries, restaurants, banks, and parks are not accessible to a population segment, that segment can be highly computer literate and still, residing under de facto Jim Crow circumstances. Those like Skinner — poor, and with a broken-down car — were simply stuck, and fuming at being abandoned, they say. “All the banks are closed and I just got off work,” said Thomas Visor, holding his sweaty paycheck as he, too, tried to get inside the store, where more than 100 people, all of them black or Hispanic, fretted in line. “This is crazy. How are you supposed to evacuate a hurricane if you don’t have money?
